Google to test wireless Internet service

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is getting ready to check a new technology that is likely to provide a base for a wireless version of its high-speed ‘Fiber’ Internet service.

Experts in telecommunication disclosed this after checking Google Inc’s regulatory filings.

On Monday Google Inc asked the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for permission to hold tests in and around California on various wireless spectrums like a millimeter-wave frequency that is capable of transmitting huge amounts of information.

It is unclear as to what Google Inc intends to do after the tests. However, Google Inc’s filing does indicate it has a major ambition of taking control of the Internet connectivity.

The technology it was planning to test will surly form the base for a wireless connection, which can be broadcast directly to homes and thereby removing the need for a fibre or a cable connection, the telecom experts said.

Google Inc is getting ready to develop a new direction that is today dominated by broadband and cable providers like AT&T and Verizon.

This will cut costs and increase Internet speeds and become a threat to all cable and telecoms oligopoly, experts explained.

According to experts like Stephen Crowley, millimeter frequencies have the capability to transmit data across short distances at high speeds of several gigabits every second.

Crowley is a wireless engineer who monitors the FCC filings.

This technology is a probable wireless extension of Internet giant’s Google Fiber, a wireless network. It is an economical way to serve homes directly. Instead of laying fibre to every home, Google Inc can erect a pole in a neighbourhood and beam the Internet service, Crowley explained.

Google Inc has plans to provide its high-speed Internet service to over 30 American cities. Last year, the company had signed a deal to give free wireless Internet access to at least 7,000 Starbucks cafes located across US.

The purpose of Google’s 180-day test is to speed up to test radios in a manner that is could contribute to the development of the radio art, Google said.

Meanwhile, Google politely declined to comment on its FCC filing.

The tests may simply be basic study, which may not finally lead to new services and products.

Google Inc wants to start the latest tests on November 13 at three locations in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company also said it will use radio transmitters that operate in the 24.2 GHz frequency, 5.8 GHz frequency and also in the millimeter wave bands of 81-86 GHz and 71-76 GHz.

The US FCC will be meeting on Friday on the use of wireless spectrum over and above 24 GHz for mobile services. It will also be discussing on how to aid in the development and use of a technology the uses such frequencies, experts said.

Google, meanwhile, informed that the tests will be for transmissions that are of narrow-bandwidth.

The Internet provider is not likely to transmit information over the networks. It is likely to send simple pings between different locations to measure how the signals are travelling across distances and that too in different terrains.
