Whether you stand on the left or the right, it’s time to agree:
Climate change is real.
And our current climate change, global warming, is very real.
A new report on the impact of global warming asserted that a continuing rise in temperatures could truncate crop yields and water supplies in many poverty-stricken areas around the world.
The report, released by World Bank, warned that less-fortunate regions of the world would no-doubt experience the worst effects of global warming first.
Consequently, the bank is concerned that global warming will undermine any progress that has been accomplished thus far against poverty in developing countries.
The bank believes that without urgent action warming could exceed 2 degrees Celsius, exacerbating attempts at alienating poverty in developing countries.
Already, according to the bank, average temperatures are expected to climb about 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit above pre-industrial levels based on the impact of current and past industrial atmospheric by-products.
This may mean that pro-longed droughts, severe flooding, and sea level rise may be inevitable in the future.
However, looking at long-term implications, lack of action now may result in a global temperature rise of almost 4.0 Celsius by the end of the century.
The bank insisted that if that temperature rise occurs global unrest would ensue.
In a related report, titled “Turn Down the Heat: Confronting the New Climate Normal,” specific regional impacts of global warming are analyzed.
Shrinking crop yields surfaced as imminent results of continued warming.
For example, the report cited that if global temperatures rise by just 2 degrees, Brazil’s soybean crop could see a 70% reduction in yield.
Andean countries along South America’s west coast would experience problems from glaciers melting. Likewise, countries in the Caribbean and West Indies may have their fish supplies diminished due to dynamic sea conditions.
The effects of global warming and climate change on poverty worldwide are stark and ominous, however if immediate action is taken placation of the effects is possible.
