Historic Talks Take Place between China and Taiwan Leaders

Historic talks have taken place between the leaders of China and Taiwan for the first time in over 60 years.  President Xi Jinping of China and President Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan shook hands at the start of the talks, which are seen by most as largely symbolic. US Embassy Reopens in Cuba after 54 Years

The US has reopened its embassy in the capital of Cuba after 54 years, in a step showing the growing ties between the countries.  John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, was the first in his position to visit Havana in 70 years and presided over the ceremony.  It involved the US flag being presented to the same US marines who had brought it down in 1961. Lawmakers in Greece Approve Latest Bailout

Greek lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favour to approve the harsh austerity bill put in place by the country’s creditors on Thursday, despite the significant dissent from members of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ own party. Greek PM Urges No Vote in Bailout Referendum

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has urged the Greek people to reject the demands of the country’s creditors ahead of a snap referendum on Sunday concerning the financial crisis it is facing.  Mr Tsipras said that a clear vote against the austerity measures would assist Greece in getting a better settlement from its creditors. US President Barack Obama has said that his country’s days of meddling in the affairs of Latin America countries has come to an end while speaking at the 7th Summit of the Americans, held in Panama City. Obama Chooses Inside Man for Secret Service Job
